Schools

The first school in Upton was located in a small cottage on Greasby Road. this was replaced by a purpose built school in Rake Lane, this in turn was replaced by St Mary's School in Church Road. These schools were the predecessors of the present day Overchurch Infant and Junior Schools.

In 1863 the girls boarding school opened in Upton Hall, this is still operating, although it is no longer a boarding school. At the same time as the boarding school, a free school was opened on the same site, this became the present day St Joseph's Primary School.

Hayfield School is a special school for primary age pupils with moderate learning difficulties, located on Manor Drive.

There have been several other schools within the township which have now closed. Round about 1936, Upton Modern School, in Grafton Drive, operated for a few years, this school used the new Montessori approach to education; Kingsley Preparatory School opened in Ford Road in 1929, and continued until a few years ago, although in its later days it became a nursery school; Upton Manor was, for a period, the prep school for Upton Hall Convent and St Benedict's High School closed in 2002.
