A 'Surrey of the North' is how Sir Nikolaus Pevsner described Cheshire, and the title is no less apt for the Wirral itself. While the inhabitants of the Wirral might say that the tag would be truer if it were reversed they would still feel that the Peninsula has much to commend it which Surrey lacks - not least a coastline.
Alan Brack's book is concerned with all those aspects of the Wirral, whether of history, architecture or landscape, which give individuality to the area. Well known as a writer on the locality, Mr Brack starts with the immense advantage of having lived in it nearly all his life.

The seventh book in our "Yesterday's Wirral" series sees a return to the area which was covered in our second book, first published eleven years ago. Since then many new pictures have come our way and it has once again proved a difficult task deciding what to include. This time Upton and Bidston are both featured. Hopefully our selection will give much pleasure to those glancing through the pages and also help to bring back happy memories to those who can still recall times gone by when life was lived at a different pace.

The photographs brought together in this book give a glimpse of people and places in the northern part of the Wirral Peninsula during the early years of this century.The pictures show a way of life which has almost disappeared, as agriculture in this part of Wirral has been forced to retreat before the expansion of the urban population.
Many of the farmhouses, cottages and inns featured in the book have been demolished to make way for modern housing estates and many of the country lanes have become arterial roads. Some old farm buildings remain, although much altered, and have been converted into shops and banks and most of the remaining cottages have been modernised.
