There are 36 Uptons and 14 Uptons-with-hyphenated-suffixes (such as Upton-by-Chester) in the United Kingdom. As far as I'm concerned the only one of any interest is the one that is located on the Wirral peninsula, close to Birkenhead (I could of course be biased as I live there).
Upton is usually referred to a a village, and indeed Ford Road where it runs through the shopping area is named 'The Village'. Historically, however, Upton is a township.
There were two annual fairs held in Upton, one held on the last Friday of April and the second held on the Friday before Michaelmas.During the fairs races were held in a field known as the 'Big Croft'. There was also a weekly market but this was discontinued when Birkenhead Market opened.
In 1889, records show that the township extended to 943 acres with a valuation of £4,068 and a population of 622. There were 116 dwelling houses, 2 fully licensed inns and a beer-house.
